Gardenia

Gardenia is a genus of 142 species of flowering plants from the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to tropical and subtropical Africa, southern Asia, Australasia and Oceania. Some species occurred in Hawaii, where gardenias or Nanu.Genus called Nau was named by Carl Linnaeus after Dr Alexander Garden (1730-1791), an American naturalist born in Scotland.

They are green shrubs and small trees growing to 1-15 meters (3.3 to 49 feet). The leaves are opposite or whorls of three or four, 50-50 cm (2.0 to 20) and 3-25 cm long (1.2 to 9.8 in) wide, dark green and glossy with a rough texture. The flowers solitary or in small groups, white, or pale yellow, with a crown-shaped tube-based 5-12 lobes (petals) 5-12 cm (from 2.0 to 4.7 in) diameter. Flowering is from about mid-spring to mid summer and many species are very fragrant.

Gardenia is a valuable plant for a strong sweet scent of their flowers, which can be very large in some species.

Gardenia jasminoides (syn. G. grandiflora, G. Florida) grown as house plants. This species can be difficult to grow because it comes from the warm humid tropics. This requires high humidity to thrive and bright light (not direct). It is grown in acidic soil with good drainage and developed in [temperature 68-74 F (20-23 C)] in the daytime and 60 F (15-16 C) at night. Pot soil was developed especially for gardenias available. G. jasminoides grow no larger than 18 inches high and wide when grown indoors. In a climate where it can grow outdoors, can reach a height of 6 meters. If the water hits the flowers, they will turn brown.


In Japan and China, Gardenia jasminoides called Kuchinashi (Japanese) and Zhi zi (Chinese 栀子); blooms are used as yellow dye, used for clothing and food (including mung bean jelly called hwangpomuk Korea).

In France, a few decades ago, the Gardenia is the traditional flower sometimes boutonnières male wearing on special occasions.

This is the national flower of Pakistan, and, gardenia, known as interest favorite famous actress Joan Crawford.

Billie Holiday jazz singer known to wear a gardenia in her hair, one of the most visible feature. He calls them his trademark.
