Moorish Idol

 Moorish idol, Zanclus cornutus ("Crowned Scythe"), is a small marine fish species, representatives of which still exist [Single Family (biology) Zanclidae (from zagkios Greek, "skewed") in order Perciform. A general population subtropical and tropical reef lagoon, Moorish idol is important for wide distribution in the Indo-Pacific. A number of butterflies (Heniochus genus) is very similar to the Moorish idol. This is closely related to, if not a direct descendant of brevirhostris Eozanclus extinct, from the Middle Eocene Monte Bolca.

Moorish Idol got its name from the Moors of Africa, which is said to believe (d) fish became carriers of happiness. Moorish idol is also a popular aquarium fish, but despite their popularity, they are known for short life span and sensitivity aquarium.


Generally, shallow-water dwellers, Moorish idols prefer reef flat. Fish can be found at depths of 3-180 meters (9.8 to 590 ft), in both cloudy and clear conditions. Moorish idol range covers East Africa, Indian Ocean and Ducie Islands, Hawaii, southern Japan and all of Micronesia, they also found from the southern Gulf of California south to Peru.

Sponges, tunicates and other benthic invertebrates are some of the Moorish idol food in the wild. Captive Moorish idol is usually a very picky eater. They'll eat anything (unusual) and perish or eat everything (rare). Small part of avocado and banana sometimes eat in captivity
